A complete set of grow lights always contains a growbulb(HPS), ballast (USA) and a lampshade. The lamp sets vary from 100, 250, 400, 600 and up to 1000 watts. Often the lower wattages, 100 and 250 are used at the growing phase of plants. The most common grow lights are 400 and 600 watt. These sets are ideal for growth and flowering the plant. The 1000 watt grow lights are less used because of the high energy and heat.

What is a growbulb?

A grobulb  also know as gas discharge lamp consists a glass cap with an electrical core. The glass cap, bulb is filled with gas. Common used gases are krypton, argon and neon. Often these are mixed with high-minded gases. Other metal halides such as mercury and sodium can be added to. In combination with a electric field it creates a electric flow in the gas. This ensures that small particles are getting accelerated.  During the acceleration the electrons collide against the atoms of the metal and causing gas energy. This is called gas discharge. This released energy contains light and heat.

Low pressure gas discharge

There are a lot of low pressure gas lamps like the fluorescent lamp and the bulb. The farming industry have special grow lamps like the fluorescent lamps. These are not well developed yet, and are often used for the growth phase. Big companies like Phillips are working on a better technology for these products.

High pressure gass discharge

The high pressure sodium lamp also called HPS lamp, is the most common grow lamp. This lamp is specially designed for the professional greenhouse. In combination with a low color temprature makes this bulb ideal for flowering a plant. Examples of high pressure sodium lamps are: Philips SonT Master Pia, G.E.lucalox of  Osram.  The most used grow lights are 400 and 600 watts. Because of the high lumen watt ratio it's a lot cheaper than an incandescenbulb. The big disadvantage of a HPS lamp is the enormous heat loss. Especially when your grow lamps are docked togetter in a room, the temprature can rise fast. This requires you a good extractor fan and filters.

Ballast

Discharge lamps can not directly connected to a power up, like a normal lightbulb. It requires a ballast, also know as USA or VSA. a VSA consists a coil winding and a condenser. By the voltage and frecquency change, it's possible to ignite the lamp. There are many different brands on the market, like Vosslosch, Phillips, and ELT. They are also available in various versions starting from 100 to 1000watt.

Electronic ballast (ECG - EVSA)

Recently, a new model for ballast is released on the market. The so-called electronic ballast also know as ECG or EVSA. Because the ECG is not made of copper coils and capacitors, but from PCB this makes it a lot safer to use. Also, the energy efficient electronic ballasts produces a higher lumen output. The main advantages lies in it's low weight and the short startup voltage.  A disadvantage is the high peak, you need to protect your light fuses more in the switchboard. The overall digital version is more expensive than his brother. A couple models are B.A.L, B.A.L. remote, Lumatek, and Leuchtek. All models are avaidable in 400 and 600 watt.

Lampshade

A good lampshade is important to a good set of lights. A good lampshade ensures optimal reflection of your light. Lampshades come in two variants, the mirror and the hammer caps. The mirror cap has a smooth, polished surface. This one is used the most. The hammercap has a dented surface also called the hammerblow. This is often used for the grow phase of the plant. Because the hammercaps can be on for at least 18 hours per day, and they will not burn the crop. Lampshades are in various shapes and sizes. The most common caps are listed bellow.

Standard mirror - Hamer cap

Due the low prices and good reflection, this is the most popular cover in the market. These caps are combined with a complete grow set.

Cooltube - Shade

These caps are designed to eliminate the heat of the grow lights. In front of the lamp special cap is been placed. This will keep it cool in your room, but you dont have any loss of light. These caps are otfen used in the growroom and smaller growing tents.

Wing

These are extra large caps in the shape of a wing. Through this special form, they can spread the light over a wider area. This way  you can get higher yield of the lamps.
